Pragmatic and Ethnographic Translation

Pragmatic Translation
Pragmatic translation: it refers to the   translation of a message with an   interest in accuracy of the information   that was meant to be conveyed in the   SL form and it is not conveyed with   other aspects of the original language   version. Example: the translation of the   information about repairing a machine.

  • penerjemahan pragmatic bertujuan menerjemahkan suatu pesan dengan memperhatikan keakuratan informasi yang akan disampaikan dalam bentuk bahasa sumber serta informasi tidak disampaikan berdasarkan aspek yang lain dari versi bahasa aslinya. Contoh: penerjemahan informasi mengenai perbaikan mesin.

Food Label à this label was written well and accurately, but it still not naturally translated from English into Indonesia. Some words sound strange.  Like, the word “Penstabil Nabati” which sound strange. In the label there are English and Indonesian written. It is using Literary Translation, because it translates one by one word as its real meaning.

Ethnographic Translation

Ethnographic translation: its purpose is to explicate the cultural context of the SL and TL versions. Translators have to be sensitive to the way words are used and must know how the word fits into cultures. Example: the use of the word ‘yes’ versus ‘yeah’ in America.

·   penerjemahan ethnographic bertujuan menjelaskan secara lengkap konteks budaya menurut versi bahasa sumber dan bahasa sasaran. Penerjemah harus peka terhadap kata-kata yang digunakan dan tahu bagaimana sebuah kata digunakan secara pas dalam kebudayaan tersebut. Contoh: penggunaan kata ‘yes’ dibanding ‘yeah’ di America.

Handphone Brochure à this brochure was written well, nut some words still strange. Like “Al-Qur’an” (Arabic) which written just “Qur’an”.
It is using a Naturalization Translation.
